Member programs use the following approaches to fairly and efficiently address sustainability and quality-of-life goals at the community scale:

Engage local governments

• Directly involve cities and towns in planning and implementation

• Identify and share proven best practices

Coordinate and tailor support

• Organize critical state actors—including agencies, nonprofits, planning organizations, academic institutions, and industry—to coordinate policy and technical/financial resources that support local action

• Tailor national tools, campaigns, and resources to state-specific legal, policy, political, and environmental contexts

Support implementation and measure progress

• Help cities move from pledges and plans to real-world action with data, training, and hands-on technical assistance

• Facilitate peer city engagement for regional action

• Measure, reward, and track city progress to ensure impact
